Pair of French Antique Brass Fire Dogs (Andirons / Chenets)
This fine pair of French antique brass fire dogs (also known as andirons or chenets) dates to the early 20th century and was sourced in southwest France. These elegant fireplace accessories combine decorative detail and historic function, originally used to support logs and promote airflow in an open hearth while preventing wood from rolling forward.
Each piece features elaborately cast brass columns with acanthus leaf motifs, geometric ornamentation and classic scrollwork, displaying early 20th-century French decorative taste. Behind each brass front sits a sturdy cast-iron rear support bar, reflecting traditional construction and ensuring practical utility.
Professionally cleaned and gently hand-polished in our studio to preserve and enhance the original surface quality, both fire dogs remain in excellent condition for their age, with historic wear consistent with a century of use.
