Pair French Bronze Firedogs Louis XIV Style - Early 19th Century
Sourced in Southwest France, this splendid pair of fire dogs / andirons feature decorative embellished flowers to the tops and fleurs de lys around the circular central ball.
The pair could be used traditionally as firedogs or log supports in an open fireplace or purely enjoyed as decorative ornaments.
To the base there are classical mask (marmouset) pedestals with further floral decoration. These characteristic grotesque masks, inspired by the figures found in Gothic and Renaissance architecture, add considerable character to the pair.
They are in very good antique condition, having been professionally cleaned and lacquered, giving the bronze an attractive, well-preserved finish.
